Notes"In the land where Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez's magical realism reigns, there has always been a blurry line between reality and fiction. So it was hardly surprising when the fantastical case of 144 Colombian army soldiers who found and pocketed at least $16 million in guerrilla stash went to the big screen this month in the same week that 53 of those soldiers were sentenced by military tribunal. The rest are on the run."

NotesThis article discusses many different things about Colombia; in the section titled "A Nation in Spite of Itself" the author states, "A common Colombian culture is unmistakable. With great self-confidence, Colombians claim to speak better Spanish than the Spanish. Regional differences certainly exist. Folklore, song, and dance styles differ by region but are honored widely. The screechy rhythms of vallenato country music from the northeast (think bluegrass), now lead the national charts. Novelist and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez and world-renowned painter and sculptor Fernando Botero are national unifiers. Recent Grammy winner Shakira is a great source of national pride." The author also references two of Márquez's works, "El general en su laberinto" and "News of a Kidnapping" in his notes.
